Workshop: Design thinking: Application in the classroom

Design thinking is a non-linear, iterative process that many modern day industries use to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative solutions. In this workshop, I will be introducing the 5 stages of the Design Thinking process and modelling ways in which teachers can apply this within their own classrooms. I will be referencing specific examples from my own experiences as a Science and STEM teacher and provide a series of helpful teaching tools, catered to a range of different classroom settings.
I graduated from The University of Melbourne in 2014 where I completed my Bachelor of Science, majoring in Animal Biotechnology. After my studies I took some time to travel and spent 2 months teaching English to children in rural Bali. It was at this time that I discovered my passion for teaching and desire to continue working with children. Upon my return home I enrolled in the Diploma of Teaching where I had the incredible opportunity to complete my Masters degree as an exchange student in Finland.
In 2017 I started working at a secondary school in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne as a Science and STEM teacher. Working as an integral member in the development of the schools first STEM Academy, I was able to learn about and witness first-hand the importance of student autonomy, collaboration and real-life application. I feel that it is incredibly important in this modern day that we as educators encourage our students to be life-long learners and problem solvers so they are better equipped to tackle the challenges of our ever-changing world.
